| Phu Quoc | Phu Quoc in October 2008 Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 05:31 AM UTC
I would love to get a good sense of the weather conditions in Phu Quoc during the month of October. I hear on many info websites that the rainiest time is October, but we have planned our trip to be in Phu Quoc from October 21-25 this fall. Is that a bad plan? Should we find an alternative beach/island somewhere off the eastern coast of Vietnam to ensure better weather? Or is Phu Quoc totally worth it and is it great no matter the season?
Also, could someone please tell me decidedly whether we should risk buying the plane tickets ahead of time and have it be canceled, or should we take the fast boat from the coast? Thanks in advance for any true, experienced advice. |

Ricky's answer for the weather seems to show it's not bad for October. It's really hard to tell in advance . When I was in Phu Quoc in May 2007 it wasn't supposed to rain but did, practically every day. Not enough to spoil the 5 days but annoying. As for boat or plane all depends where you are coming from. I took the fast boat from Rach Gia as I came from Cambodia. Boats leave at 8h30 and 13h30, cost about $5 and takes 2 1/2 hours. Don't remember the price of the plane which we took out to HCMC, but it wasn't expensive and only takes an hour.

I agree that it is hard to tell how the weather will be like. We yet know in the South and particularly Phu Quoc (surrounded by waters), October is still in the rainny season even though it is commming to the end of the rainny season. therefore it will be rainning now and then. If this year's rainny season is not coming along with any severe low pressures or storms in the East Coast of Vietnam (usually storms and low pressures form in the waters area between The Philippines, China and Vietnam), then it should be fine for tourists to visit the Phu Quoc Island in October no matter it may rain sometimes.
Flying from Hochiminh city to the island will save you a lot of time but as you said flights can be cancelled if weather is bad. So when you are in Hochiminh, check the weather and then buy tickets. Hydrofoils are always available but you have to catch mini bus to get to Rach Gia (or Ha Tien) where you will catch hydrofoils to the Island. Most hydrofoils companies include your fare of transportation (usually mini bus or car) from the port to the town centre, so you do not have to pay any extra fee for the trip to town. Just ask the staff about that. Once the boat has docked, you can ask the staff which bus or car that takes you to the town. Really hope that you will have a great time in Vietnam

i was in Phu Quoc Dec 2007.I bought a ticket to Rach Gia.it was a pleasant 6 hrs drive in an a/c minivan ($5).they will make 1 resting stop.they will drop you off at the bus stop.i wanted to spend 1 night at Rach Gia because i got there in the late evening.i catch a motorbike guy and he took me to a small hotel (sorry forgot the name),it was close to the boat dock.at the hotel i bought a fast boat called Superdong.the ride was about 2 1/2 hrs.it was around christmas so they jacked up the price to about ($10).my hotel stay was around ($10) with a/c. the weather in Phu Quoc was around 75-80 F in the afternoon and about 65-70 F at night. Like other Vters mentioned above that the weather can be unpredictable. Hope this helps.
oh,forgot about the entertainment. not much to do in Phu Quoc,i rented a motorbike for about $5 per day and just rode around siteseeing, and at night I went to a couple of bars and a dancing club (forgot the name).Good luck and have fun!

My wife and I plan to visit Thailand and Vietnam starting around Oct 27th like you. As you may know, Phu Quoc lies off the most southern part of the Vietnam coast. It also lies in a complex weather area. It is affected by the East Asian monsoon, which I believe extends from Korea south to Vietnam. In fact, much of central and northern Vietnam is influenced by the East Asian monsoon season which generally runs through the end of October.
Ha Tien, located next to Cambodia at a southern most part of Vietnam (across from Phu Quoc) historically records little rain in October. I believe the same applies for Phu Quoc, while central Vietnam (Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ha Noi) north continue to receive significant rain through the month of October and sometimes into November. I would say this is a good time to visit Phu Quoc, and my wife and I plan to be there in the third week of November. I understand Phu Quoc is a great place to visit and we plan to spend 10 days there. Happy travels! rg
