On Costa cruise - have stop in Malta - can I tour Malta without forking over the big bucks for a shore excursion, i.e., do it on my own?

If you are stopping in Valetta, you'll be able to use the wonderful Malta buses which go from the bus station. Depending on how much time you have, you will be able to at least see some of Malta, perhaps Medina and/or the Tarxien prehistoric temples (very near Valetta) at least. Valetta itself is worth an hour or so of exploration. Info on buses here:

Sure you can...all you need walk up the hill from the harbour to Valletta terminus about (15mins walk)& head to some pre planned destination depends what you want to see..obviously although Malta is a small island it have too many attractions and definatly wont be covered in a day! plan what you want to achieve and visit example fortifications in valletta, mdina or the 3 cities, prehestoric & neolitic temples,Boat ride in Blue grotto caves, the 3 cities harbour cruise, visit Mdina the silent city,Valletta market,Palace armoury in Valletta,Glass blowing in Ta qali craft village, Shopping in Sliema or Valletta,etc..etc..it all depends what you like to visit,do and how long before missing the boat..

Not sure if you have started your cruise. Just back from Western Mediterranean cruise with Costa Concordia and visited Malta by myself. They offer 1 Euro return to the main gate where you can find bus to Mdina. When back to town, you take a walk along the main road and then the same bus back to the port.

The day we ahored in Malta, we learnt that the 1st president of Malta just passed away on May 01, at 99 years olds.
