Can anyone confirm to me that there are still regular trains running from Portimao to Tavira and if so, how frequent are they.

Yes, there are.

Go to:

http://www.cp.pt/cp/displayPage.do?vgnextoid=87cbd5abe2a74010VgnVCM1000007b01a8c0RCRD&lang=en

(Portugese trains in English). Then click on 'regional' under the 'travelling in Portugal' tab. Then click 'timetables and prices' on the left-hand menu.

Then you'll be able to enter Portimao and Tavira into the search box provided to see how often trains run at the time you want to travel. Not terribly frequent, but more than one time option.

If you try to search using the yellow 'Net ticket' box it won't work.

Indeed, they do. Outside of the bus or if you've not got a car, Algarve's regional train service is the main transport option for the locals, as well as for travelers seeking a bit more adventure to their trip. The slight drawback is its infrequent schedule as VT member Leics has mentioned. Make sure to check at the train station where you'd be based at or with the town's tourist office who can tell you the schedule tho sometimes theirs are slow to update. Good luck and happy trails.

I have the current train timetable on my website at www.algarvebus.info/006.htm

This is in operation "until further notice".

Be aware that in all cases it is necessary to change trains at Faro. I have therefore two timetables; one for the trains east of Faro (eg at Tavira) and one for the trains west of Faro eg at Portimao.

My site also contains the bus timetables for the Algarve region.
