I'm interested in studying in the Valparaíso University for a summer, possibly summer 2009. I would like to know any information about the university, the city, or safe areas within. If you could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I have heard that the Chilean spanish is different from the other countries. What is the reaction of Chileans to United States citizens. Can you tell me more about this? |

Hi there,
You might like to take a look at my Valparaiso and Viña del Mar pages for information on the area. The university you mention is reputable and well known. I am a young, foreign female (from New Zealand) living in Santiago. I have not had any issues while living in Chile. Chilean Spanish is not very clear. The Chileans tend to swallow the words and speak very fast and have their own slang way of speaking (for example: "como estas" becomes "como estai"). I am sure you will enjoy Chile and have a good time here. Cheers, Rhianon
