Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Athens Athens on Easter and various other questions to come
Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 01:02 PM UTC
Hello everyone.
First of all I want to thank in advance to those who will be answering my questions.;)
We will be in Athens on the 24th, before Easter. As I'm orthodox, I'd like to attend the Friday and Saturday mass. Could someone recommend us a Cathedral downtown?
Also, my fiance and I are very passionate Salsa dancers so we would like to find a club where such classes are held and where parties take place.
Least but not last....I don't trust weather forecasts so could someone give me some guidelines about what we can wear while there?
Thanks again,
Delia & Co.

In Greece more than 95% are Orthodox. All churches will have evening services on Great Friday (lamentations and epitaph procession) and Great Saturday (starting around 23.00 for the Resurrection that is announced just after midnight and followed by the Resurrectional Service ending around 2.00 in the morning). Especially on Saturday night it will be difficult to move to long distance (not many transports available), so just go to the church nearest to your place. Also on Saturday evening and Sunday many restaurants will be closed, so on your arrival check in advance where you can eat on that days. About the weather and clothes, heavy winter is over but at night you need a medium jacket and possibly a light rain-coat or umbrella...

Buna ziua!

I would recommend you the "Cathedral or Metropolis" of Athens (Biserica Metropolitana).Certainly, it is not the most remarkable church of Athens, but being, essentially, the "centre" of the most important and pompous celebrations and processions, it is, certainly, the place to be!

Especially, on Good Friday, when the procession of "Epitafios" takes place. It gets out of the Cathedral around 09:00 pm, so try to pick a nice place on the neighbouring streets, in order to take nice photos and videos.Try to be there in advance, there will be many people waiting for this unique religious celebration.

Calatorie placuta!

If you like smaller, older churches, "Metoxi" in Plaka is excellent. It sits in the courtyard of an old monastery and is a bit tricky to find, but if you ask any of the shop owners they will most likely be able to tell you how to get there. It is close the the top of a street called 'Mnisicleaous' and to the left?? Again, ask. It is lit only by candle light and is quite special. It would be a good choice for Megalo Savato.

SALSA! oh YEAH! I love to go dancing too! The club that used to be called "Chica-Boom" in an area of Athens called Alimos, has a new name and owner, and is an excellent school that has dance parties on Friday and Saturday nights. Check out my pages for Chica-Boom and I think the phone number is the same. I will try to get back to you later with more details:):)

I was thinking about the same thing. ;)
We'll be in Athens as of next Thursday until the 3rd of May. Do you think we can organize something by then? :D We'd be thrilled.

Insularius, buna seara. :) Thank you for the list, you're a life saviour. And I'm impressed by your multilingual skills. :)
