Hello! My fiance and I are getting married next October. We are considering Montreal for our honeymoon. We do not speak a word of french. Can we get by? We will certainly try to learn a little before then, but....we dont want to feel lost the whole trip.
Also, can you recommend a nice, romantic hotel conveniently located to shopping, restaurants, etc.
Thanks so much!

First: congratulation!
As for the language, there's no problem getting by anywhere in Montreal with just speaking english. Lot of tourists do, and a part of the population too. (Of course, a little bit of french is appreciate, like Merci, Bonjour, etc. )
I don't have any hotel name in head, but if you go any Montreal touristic website, look for ones in downtown (St-Paul St, La Commune... I know they have great little romantic hotels there, one name St-Jame I think is very special) or near the Mont-Royal like Cherrier st or in "Quartier Latin".

I would recommend also, for this time of the year, to go north to see the autum colors. Cities like St-Sauveur, Ste-Adele and so on, about 1 hour drive north from Montreal, are perfectly romantic and beautiful.
Have a nice trip!

Ask a Montrealer what the word is for car - then you will understand!

I think Robert was intending to state that english is well understood in Montreal.

Its not what you know -the fact that you try is much more important. Its the same in any country/language. If you speak french, even a little, that is all that matters. Perhaps the Quebecois have another name for toilet!

Re: Re: Honeymoon Posted: Fri October 3, 2003 09:26 AM UTC
Yes all the above is true, but remember, downtown and West of the island, it's all english, there is no need to speak french. I'm bilingual, and I find myself speaking more english than french in that part of town.
If you go to the East side, where the biodome and the stadium is, then it's pretty much all french there.
For the hotels, the really nice ones, all you have to do is walk up and down Sherbrook St., they are all there!!!

I've been to Montreal several times. Everyone speaks English, but some of the Older folks pretend not to. Younger locals are much more accepting. I have always stayed at the Queen Elizabeth hotel. Right in downtown and fairly priced. The Subway station can is right inside the hotel basement

For a splurge stay at Les Places Des Arms in Old Montreal. You will undoubtedly spend a lot of time in this area of town. It is beautiful.
I have to warn you though, it will likely be quite cold.
Have fun and congrats!
