| San Francisco | Safe, conveniently located, reasonably priced accomodations Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 01:00 AM UTC
My daughter and I are planning a trip to SF. I'd like to find a hotel that is conveniently located (near cable lines to major attractions), reasonably prices (<$125-150), and in a safe neighborhood for walking through midnight.
Any ideas? |

I would say that you might want to check out the Hotel del Sol in Cow Hollow, and a number of other joie de vivre hotels. Google joie de vivre. One thing you might want to be aware of is that some hotels that are touted as being in Union square are actually much more in the tenderloin and in some dicey surroundings. I wouldn't go south from Geary towards Market street on a map.

I like the area Hotel Del Sol is located. However, it is quite a long walk to the cable car lines and famous tourist attractions. To get to Union Square, you would have to either walk to G. Square and wait in the long line every time or walk to Van Ness Avenue and take the bus to O'Farrel or Eddy, than get on another bus to Union Square. The bus on Van Ness is my least favorite in San Francisco, lots of weirdos lol.
The Chancellor Hotel has an excellent location in the heart of Union Square. I did a quick search in May and their rates are $135 per night because they are having a special if you book multiple nights. If it does not work out, I would look for hotels in Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, or Financial District.

try the Sir Francis Drake in the heart of downtown Union Square. Look under "Kimpton," the parent corporation. THey may run over $150 or so, but you step out of the hotel onto the Fisherman's Wharf cablecar.

Joiedevivre Phoenix Hotel is cool if your daughter is a teenager. Good chances of a rock band being there too.
My daughter cannot think of another hotel to stay in SFO... where some of her idols have stayed. Actually there was a british band staying there last year when we visited SFO. I have a picture of her and her friend by their bus on my SFO (still to be completed) page. But... if you like quiteness it may not be the hotel for you, as people like to party a bit and this hotel is tolerant. We knew what we were expecting, so no problem for us.

The best choice would be the King George Hotel on Mason Street off Geary. It is 1 block from Powell Street (cable cars) and Union Square.
Another good hotel would be the Mark Twain on Taylor. I can't imagine why ANYONE would be walking around at midnight, but that's none of my business.
