| Bari | rental car dilemma Posted: Mon April 7, 2008 10:46 PM UTC
We'll be docking at the cruise pier on Sunday, April 20th. We are desirous of renting a car to get to Alberbello and view the trulli edifices. So far, it appears that the downtown rental car offices are closed on Sunday. We are slated to dock at 10 am and must be back on board by 2:30. The airport is North of Bari and we need to go South. Can't imagine that we'd have time to go the opposite direction to get a car and then have to do the same thing upon return. Does anyone know of a place to rent a car on a Sunday other than at the airport? Or, is the frequent, reliable public transportation we could take to get to Albobello from the pier? Thanks for the hope.

Well, 4.5 hours is not a lot of time to accomplish your mission. Yes, the auto rental places I know of are closed on Sunday except at the airport (obviously, I didn't check them all).
If you go by train, it's 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes each way. The first train you could catch is at 10:53, arriving at 12:15 in Alberobello. To get back by 2:30, you'd have to take the 12:33 train from Alberobello back to Bari, arriving at 14:04, leaving you time to walk to the docks. As you can see, this really doesn't work unless you want to spend 3 hours on a train. If you're determined to do this, I'd either find a driver to pick you up at the docks and take you there and back (sorry, don't know of one), or arrive at the pier, take a taxi direct to the airport (10 kilometers or less), rent the car, then drive the hour to Alberobello, spend 30-60 minutes sighteseeing, then drive the hour back to the airport, return the car, then take a taxi back to the docks...you know, unless you have a driver waiting for you at the docks, I just don't see how you're going to have enough time to see anything...
