Helsinki Weather and length of day February - May
Posted: Mon April 7, 2008 10:23 PM UTC
I am considering going to Helsinki for 1 semester next year, but I have to decide tomorrow. My choices are Liverpool, Copenhagen and Helsinki. I like Helsinki the most, but I am worried about the weather.
What can I expect form February to May? How much light do you get in February during the day? I sure expect some cold weather, but I would like to travel and do some sightseeing, which is a little bit complicated in 3°C.
Thanks!

As Pupulainen said, last winter was exceptionally warm, but -15 degrees is not likely either, maybe only for short occasions. It tends to be depressingly grey and cloudy in February. In March there are usually some warm and sunny days, but temperatures can stay under ten degrees in April as well. Good thing is that from the end of March, the sun rises already before 7 o'clock and doesn't set before 8 in the evening, so the days are long and getting 5 minutes longer every day.

If you will be in Helsinki you will pray that it is -3 and not +3. It is much better for a tour and hiking when it is slightly frozen and hopefully with a while snow on the ground.
Liverpool or Copenhagen? No matter when, I promise you, no snow, wet and grey most of the time.

I hope you descided to go to Helsinki! I lived there 1,5 half year ago for 5 months (september-january) Finland is a great country and Helsinki a lovely city, it was the best time of my life! And yes, there is not that much daylight but the shortest days are at the end of december-beginning of January...and then it soon gets better! And even if it is cold sightseeing won't be a problem!
