Vienna Train from Vienna to Prague
Posted: Mon April 7, 2008 04:30 PM UTC
Ok ... So I've been reading here in all the forums and it looks like a good place to ask my question.

I'm planning on travelling to Vienna in Septemeber. I want to take a train from Vienna to Prague. The thing is,I'm not sure from where to take the train (what station in Vienna?)to go to Prague from Vienna. If possible how much it costs and how easy is it to get the tickets from the station once there or purchasing them here in the states before going there. So if anyone out there has any of this info .. I'd really appreciate your reply. Thank you in advance!!! :)

Welcome to VT. You'll find the forums are as helpful as they appear!

You don't really need to buy tickets before you arrive; it's easy enough to buy them once you are in Vienna. You can buy the tickets a couple of days before you travel, if it is more convenient.

http://www.oebb.at/en/ will give you Austrian train times & fares & relevant station (they differ according to train). The journey takes between 4 and 5 hours. Some trains require an advance reservation (this can be 5 minutes before the journey, if there is space) but not all. Some are direct, some require changes.

Hi the station is Sudbahnhof (south train station) which is in the Wieden area of Vienna and fairly near the city centre. Travel times is about 4 hours but I don't know the cost. However, you should try and get a SparSchiene discount ticket which will cost you only 19 euros! But you will have to book in advance so check out the following site: http://www.oebb.at/pv/en/Travel_within_Europe/SparSchiene/index.jsp

Good luck!
John

I've heard several people saying it's quite difficult to buy tickets from OEBB online when traveling outside Austria. Personally, I recommend you buy the ticket as soon as you arrive in Vienna. The tickets can be bought from either Südbahnhof or Westbahnhof.

The Prague trains go from Südbahnhof (South train station), which is located in 10th district (Favoriten), close to 4th (Wieden). It's easy to get there for example by tramline D which you can take for example from Ringstraße (between Börse and Schwarzenbergplatz). It passes Belvedere castle.
