ciao a tutti.......I will be in italia for 3 months and will need a phone to call or email usa 4 x mo., italia 2/4 x wk. Should I buy unlocked phone & use SIM CARD or get in usa triband??? We have a usa cell phone with local service..... but it cannot be used abroad. GRAZIE!

Ciao!!! I moved here in Italy almost a year ago, brought both of my mobile phones from usa but none of them work here. I ended up purchasing an expensive tri-band motorola phone. When you get here, you can purchase a fairly cheap dual band phone, some of them comes with a sim card. The average price I have seen is 85-125 euro. There are phone cards you can purchase for 5 or 10 euro to call back in the usa, this cards can last up to 360 minutes no matter if you call a home or cel phone. Hope you enjoy your stay here in Italy....

If you are only concerned about making calls and not receiving them, Calling Cards may be the cheapest option. A mobile phone is only really useful abroad if you want to receive calls and it will not be cheap.
I can't help with Italian calling cards but my UK one would let me call the US for 3-4cents per minute. You may also be able to get USA based calling cards that allow you to make calls when you are abroad.
