| Mont Saint Michel | how many days? late august too crowded? Posted: Sun April 6, 2008 05:35 PM UTC
Hello,
I'll go to france in august and i'd like to stay with my girlfriend for a few days in mt st michel. We were planning to stay 3,5 days in the Loire Valley and 2 days in Mont St MIchel. Do you think that it is enough? How many days I need to see all the atractions and sightseens of Mt St Michel? Late august (21-23th) is still crowded? is it unbearable? Can we sleep there (how expensive it'd be?) thanks, carlos andrade brasil |

Hi Carlos. Yes Mont St. Michel will be very crowded but don't let that stop you. It is always crowded. We've been there in November in the rain and it was crowded. The first time I complained about all the people as we elbowed our way up to the church and my husband told me that it had always been a pilgrimage site so it had always been crowded. We were having an authentic experience. It didn't make the crowds go away but put them in perspective. At least these days they aren't emptying chamber pots out of second story windows onto your head. It really is worth the trip.
We've never stayed the night but I imagine it is pretty expensive and you could book rooms at a B&B across the bay that cost much less and had a great view of the Mont. If you are going in August, book your rooms ahead because that is French vacation month. You can see everything in one day so you might want to take the second day and add it to the Loire Valley. There is so much more to see in the Loire. We recently spent a month in the Loire and didn't begin to see everything. Type Loire into the VT Search Window above and see what VT members have written about it. There are lots of photos and Tips about where to stay, where to eat and things to do. You can also type the names of individual towns in the Loire into the Search Window for more VT Travel Pages. Most fun chateau . . . Chaumont with the magic gardens. Most romantic chateau . . . Chenonceau. 8^)

In France, simple double rooms cost about 50-70 euros (without breakfast). In places like Mount St-Michel, it could be much higher.
The 2 first weeks of August are the most crowded. The 2 last weeks are better: the tourists of Europe northern countries are back home. Even if it is better in late August, try to book in advance. Claude
