Hi friends,
I'm not decided as to whether we sh hire a car to go around or just take bus/buy package tours for our trip. I went to the website and found a 4 day tour for AUD$770- that's too steep for us. Is there a cheaper/better alternative to spend our holiday there? Really appreciate some help here. Thks

I would hire a car. You can get to so many more places, come and go as you please, get to off-the-beaten-path places.

I agree with Colin, grab a car.
This way you can do as you please and do it in your own time.
I suggest that you check out Redspot car rentals at the Airport.Redspot give you a price that covers all insurance etc. No extras on top.
They are in the Qantas arrivals in Cairns, where all the car rental places are.
Cairns is so easy to explore by car. There is also a cheap car hire place just near the airport. They rental older cars, my sister and son have used this company. It is Older Car and Ute hire. Cnr Airport drive and Sheridan Street, phone is 0740531066 These start at around 30 dollars a day, are fully insured etc.
Also having a car you can drive up to Cape Tribulation via Mossman Gorge.
Check out the Botanical Gardens, Collins Ave area, this is a wonderful area to wander through.
Also Crystal Cascades and Copperload Damn are other places that are fun to visit.
Check out the Northern Beaches, Palm Cove is lovely.

We hired a camper van. If you are a group of people sharing the cost of a camper van "Wicked" are a good firm, won't break the bank. Also it saves on accommodation costs.
