| Split | Parking in Split Posted: Sun April 6, 2008 03:05 AM UTC
We have booked a Hotel in Split over 16th July to 19th July but they don't have any good parking. We have a rental car which we need to park somewhere. Has anyone got experience with this and have you any suggestions for secure parking?
Thanks |

I don't think you should worry that much about the parking situation in Split - the city is not that dangerous! I can't remember of any public garage that would have 24h security.... what exists are large (open) parking lots in the center where they charge you for parking but take no responsibility for any damage or losses.... The same goes for street parking in some streets in wider central area.
Once you are there you will see the locals are very "creative" in finding free parking spaces and you should do what everyone else does - the easiest is just to park on the parking lot or on the street. (But even green spaces and sidewalks are "fine" by local standards.) Of course, do not leave any valuables visible in the car, lock the doors and you should be fine. (The only real danger are hooligans that call themselves football supporters: if your car will have Zagreb car plates and there is a football match between Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split then you should worry a bit. In that case invest in Hajduk scarf or flag and leave it visible in a car. Some people even take off the "wrong" car plates on the day of the match.)

Hi there.
There is parking available at the Riva. If you follow signs to the ferry port you will see the barrier for it to the right of the Jadrolinija ticket office, just near the market and Diocletian's Palace. Just take a ticket and pay when you leave. It is not a secure parking area, just an open air parking area, but as the previous answer mentions, Split is a relatively safe place. I have parked there overnight many times and have never had a problem. Just be sensible and don't leave valuables in the car or belongings in sight. Have a good trip. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact me. I have a house on the nearby island of Brac and am in Split quite a bit. In fact, just got back from there yesterday! PS If you're looking for a good English breakfast, I highly recommend the Black Cat!

on the same subject, is there any parking near Diocletian's Palace? I am guessing there is since it is a tourist spot.
I am only going to say in Split overnight so I have been looking at some hotels outside of Split which are cheaper and have parking. Then, I was just going to drive in an see the palace and walk around a bit.
