The train only goes to/from Surat Thani. To get to/from Samui you have to use the bus and ferry from there. Why not fly? Both Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways fly the route.

Yes but you can buy a combo train ticket including the bus and ferry to suratani all in one.
Is the flight a lot cheaper from Suratani? We would like to do the night sleeper though just for the fun of it,although may regret it! Den

From the hotels you chose I suggest you check a new resort in Maenam called Hutcha Resort. My wife and I stayed there a few weeks ago in the Superior Villa and really enjoyed it:
http://www.samuiislandhotels.com/index.php?module= You can paste that into your web browser address bar. The same booking company also shows Al's Hut and Al's Resort but I haven't stayed there before. I have heard really nice things about Papillion in Chaweng too. As far as the train, here is a good link to for information on booking in advance: http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm Scroll down to the "how to buy tickets" section. You can use the online travel agencies listed. Good luck.
