I never wear a kippa when visiting Mea Shearim. It is not a holly place and there is need for a kippa there. You only need one when you go into a synagogue. Also, the natives there wear specail cloths anyway. I'm not sure who do they dislike more: totally unreligious people or someone wearing a kippa but not part of their group.
You are correct about Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Only, I'm not sure there is much to experience there. Everything will be closed for 2.5 days for Rosh Hashana and 1.4 days for Yom Kippur. So, unless you would like to go to synagogoue there is not much to it. This will ike visiting the US on Christmas, when everything is closed and everybody spend time with their families. Anyway, Rosh Hashana starts at the evening of 29-Sep and Yom Kippur starts at the evening of 8-Oct.

1 kippa
2 kippot :-) If you visit the Wall, or a synagogue it is required to wear a head covering. For walking around town, in a religious area or not, then you do not need a kippa and the wearing of one may be taken in the wrong light. Rosh Hashana will be from sundown 29.09.08 - sundown 01.10.08, but as pointed out by the poster above, on Monday 29.09 everything will close down a good deal earlier than usual. Even buses will stop at least 1 hour before sundown and maybe earlier. Yom Kippur will be from sundown 08.10.08 - sundown on 09.10.08 with the above caveat. Expect everything to close very much earlier.

Notice that on Yom Kippur, you can't even get a taxi. So, you can only walk around.
