San Francisco Photography in Alcatraz during night tour?
Posted: Thu April 3, 2008 05:31 AM UTC
Hi,

If i choose to go for the night tour in Alcatraz, am i still able to take clear and not dark pictures when touring the insides of the prison itself? Or will it be too dark for photos at a certain point of time?

Will it be better in the day for photography?

thanks.

Hi, my husband and I did the night tour and he took photos inside the prison with few problems. He bought a Nikon D40 prior to our trip, which allowed him to adjust the light settings in order to get good photos though. So I don't know if our photos would've turned out as well had he brought his old camera, which was just your basic digital point-and-click. If you want to take a look at his photos, he posts them on Flickr.com and has them set to public so people can see. Go to Flickr.com/brettritch. I hope this helps.

Bring a small tripod and use your camera's self-timer. That will get you clear pictures in almost any light with all but the cheapest cameras.

I just checked the specs for that camera. The longest shutter it will do is 1 second, which may be enough if there's at least some light. I don't know if you have to monkey with the settings to do a really long exposure. It may have a night shot mode. If so, that's probably your best bet.

For best results, put the camera on a tripod and use the self-timer so you are not touching it while the shot is taken. The goal is to have it as steady as possible.

Or use the flash... But that gives ugly pictures.
