| Venice | Hotel/ hostel recommendations... AND what to see while there? Posted: Thu April 3, 2008 02:45 AM UTC
My sister and I will be flying into the Venice Marco Polo airport and I am looking for recommendations on where I should book our hotel/hostels. I would like something that is easy to get to from the airport, as well as near some landmarks in Venice.
ALSO... what are some good things to see while in venice? |

Hi, from the airport you have 2 main options - waterbus 1 hour 10 mins to San Marco 12 euro return or bus 25 - 30 mins to P. Roma 3 euros.(3rd option is the extortionate priced water taxi)
Venice is quite small, so not too difficult to get around on foot or by vaporetto (waterbus)- buy tourist travel ticket for unlimited use.If you stay near the main attractions in San Marco etc, it will be more expensive. Look at other areas, cheaper, and as I said, its not difficult to get to the attractions from other parts of Venice Look at venere.com, Bookings.com for accommodation, plus check out mine and other VTers tips on places to stay in Venice/ Things to see and do etc Good things to see? Depends what You're interested in, Venice has a lot to offer. Check out VTers pages to get a good idea. Have A Great trip, and feel free to contact me for more info. Best Wishes, Sue

It depends very much of your time, budget and taste...
I tell you what I chose to do in Venice. I preferred a cozy hotel near Salute, and walk from there to the main touristic attractions. I took the vaporetto to go to other islands, which are interesting to see too. It was more expensive than a hotel on the mainland or other island, but I saved time and transport fee. I'm not so keen in modern art, so I chose not to visit the modern art museums and exhibitions, but I still had a lot to see and enjoy in a week. If you want to visit a lot of museums, maybe Venice card is an option. Tip: if you want to visit both Museum Correr and Doge's Palace, go first to the Correr, and buy tickets for both ( and another museum of your choice listed on the ticket) and you will save the queue at the entrance of the Doge's Palace. Walking along the narrow streets is a nice experience. About pick-pocketers... try not to be reckless. If you are an easy target, you might have unpleasant experiences. Try to keep your belongings safe and close to you. I felt safe in Venice, it was ok, though a caught a kid trying to open my back-pack (where I had my water bottle and a sandwich... but I doubt kid wanted to eat from me). It depends very much on what you want from your trip. If you want a concentrated portion of art, you can visit 3-4 museums a day, but then remember little after a while... even if you buy museums' books and souvenirs... I preferred to visit a museum a day, then walk, relax, have a good time. Read a lot about your destination, try to be familiarized with the map and major touristic attractions, so that you will choose the places you want to visit. There are arrows towards St Mark Square, so it is good if you know the way from there to your hotel; thus you will never lose your way no matter what. For souvenirs and shopping: I suggest you to avoid the St Mark Square area, you better try the railway station area or Rialto Bridge area. If you want to visit the islands nearby, Murano is famous for the glass factories and glass museum, then Burano is also a beautiful island to visit. Lido is interesting too, it is a sea-side resonrt, you can sunbathe there and swim... I wish you have a very good time. Venice is a lovely city.
