| Lima | Solo travel in Peru Posted: Wed April 2, 2008 11:46 PM UTC
Hi!
I am going to be in Lima for almost 4 months starting in May. I'll be volunteering with a local organization working with street children. I was wondering how safe it would be for me (a small, 19 year blond girl) to do normal everyday things ie: riding the bus, shopping etc. alone. Also, if there are any safe ways to travel around Peru by myself, or if I should wait until I find other tourists? Keep in mind I have a student/volunteer budget. Any suggestions would be awesome! Thanks |

I felt safe when I visited Peru. As long as you are well aware of your environment/surroundings, you should be alright. I hope you are staying around Miraflores/San Isidro areas because these are "better" areas for tourists/foreigners, but it doesn't mean that crime does not happen in said areas. Again, just be highly aware and wear your money belt all the time. See my warning tip in my Lima page for some safety/cautionary measures. Goodluck & do enjoy beautiful Peru!

Like any city in the world there are good areas, and some that aren't so good.
Your first few days, play it safe. Keep your guard up and travel by day. After a few days, you will have a 'feel for the land', and know where and what you can do and when. The Miraflores area is one of the safest but is also one of the most expensive. Since you will be doing volunteer work, you should be able to quickly do some networking and settle in with ease. As with any travel... listen to that little voice. If something doesn't feel right, head for safety. Good luck with your work, the street kids are a real heart breaker.

hello, well As a born and raise peruvian girl i can tell you lima is a regular city for a girl to do normal things, girls all the time go everywhere by themselfs here, althought your blonde hair might call for some attention, but you just do what you need to do and know where you go and just forget them, also friends around wouldnt be too bad. and avoid too crowded places or informal comercial sites, but i think you wouldnt be there anyway. and if by some chance you hear that theres a football game one day, make sure you are not on their route, cause those "fans"ar kind of dangerous.
ask if u hav more questions, hope u enjoy ur time in peru
