| Minorca Island | Mahon or Ciutadella? Posted: Wed April 2, 2008 11:33 PM UTC
Hello everyone!
I am planning to go to Menorca for a a long weekend on the 12th of June. Would you reccomend staying in Mahon or Ciutadella or perhaps in both places? I've had a look and it seems that most nice beaches are around Ciutadella, but not sure about the nightlife. Will it be too quite there? My friends and I are after nice stylish bars/restaurants not the very touristy resorts. Anyone been in the Prinsotel Apartments near Ciutadella? Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks Polly :) |

I went to Mahon and did Ciutadella as 2 daytrips (ending both "daytrips" at wee hours :)
I guess it's not much difference staying in one or the other. Scattered around the island there are many interesting places, and generally it's not too touristy. Renting a car is highly advisable to get the most of it. Do not miss the club in the cave, if just for the experience. Sorry I can't remember it's name right now, but you'll find complete details of it and other things to do in my Menorca VT page, including the wonderful small hotel were we stayed :)

Hi there
The "club in a cave" that belsaita refers to is Cova d’En Xoroi (www.covadenxoroi.com). It is indeed a nice place to have a drink and enjoy the views, at least during the day. We did not visit at night, so not sure what the club is like after dark. Menorca is quite small. It is only a 40 to 50 minute drive from Mahon to Ciudadela, which are located at the easternmost and westernmost ends of the island respectively. Personally I prefer Ciudadela, which is more historical, smaller and prettier than Mahon. The historic centre, around the cathedral, is closed off to traffic and a real pleasure to wander around. But Mahon is not bad at all and, being larger than Ciudadela, it also feels livelier. Have fun.

Thanks for the reccomendations! I thought so about Mahon, we will see... it all depends on where we find a nice hotel. :)

Most hotels are scattered around the island. Only a few are located in or around Mahon and Ciudadela, so hiring a car (as belsaita suggested) would come in handy. We stayed in Es Castell, a little sleepy town just outside Mahon. Not much going on there. It suited us perfectly, as it was peace and quiet we were after, but we would not recommend to anyone looking for nightlife. Mahon is probably your best bet.
