In May we will be traveling from Avignon down to Tossa de Mar in Spain. Without a car, can you suggest the best way to reach our destination? Thank you!

Go to http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/launch/home/
There is an english version but it is not always as friendly as the french version. If not satisfactory, go back to the french. You can search for either Avignon to Barcelona (south to Tossa de Mar) or Avignon to Perpignan, which is on the way (north to Tossa de Mar). I suppose that Barcelona would be easier. Caution, if you use the SNCF website in Fench, Barcelona is "Barcelone".

I have found a better way. Use the SNCF website to go from Avignon to Girona. For example, this is what you will get for a travel today:
ALLER disponible pour le Jeudi 03/04 Durée : 06h33 AVIGNON CENTRE 10h39 PORT BOU ESPAGNE 14h28 PORT BOU ESPAGNE 16h12 GIRONA 17h12 Girona is not far from Tossa de Mar. You will certainely find local busses.
