Rio de Janeiro How are Cariocas to American travellers?
Posted: Wed April 2, 2008 02:56 AM UTC
I was just wondering how Cariocas (Rio locals) are towards American travellers... not tourists, with their fanny packs and flashing cameras every 5 seconds... but younger travellers? Do a lot of Cariocas speak English or should I brush up on my Portuguese? :-D

Thanks!!

SO basically, you're saying you want to get hit on by the local guys......and you're wondering if you will even be noticed among all the thousands of gorgeous Caricoa women your same age?
I would say buy a Brazilian bikini when you get there, bring your skimpiest outfits and highest heels for going out at night.....learn as much Portuguese as you can.......and then hope the stars and planets are aligned.

Carioca's (and brazilian) hospitality is famous. Cariocas like 'gringos' (foreigners), whether they are americans, canadians, italians, or french...
Expect to speak english only with high class and middle class young people (10-20% of the population). Waiters arent likely to speak it. Exercise your portuguese (although brazilians in general can understand native spanish speakers, as the languages are very similar, they wont understand at all if a english-speaker tried to speak spanish with them. learning some portuguese would be advisable). good luck and have fun.

Hi, in Rio the Janeiro, depend where you go, like in copacabana and centre of city, you will find people most youth who speak English., I had a friend from New Zealand who went there with other girl from London, and they did not have much struggle.
If you need any advice where to go in Rio let me know, I lived there before.
Take care.
