Vienna Vienna - Prague - Krakow - Budapest - Innsbruck - Vienna by train
Posted: Tue April 1, 2008 04:59 PM UTC
Hi,

My wife and I are planning a 3 week trip in Central Europe in the beginning of June. I am landing and flying out of Vienna so dont have any flexibility in changing that.

I wanted to buy for the Eastern European pass for $220/person for the flexibility of not getting in queue for tickets at the train stations. This decision was taken basis the understanding that point to point tickets would cost approximately the same price but from other posts i have seen in this forum it seems like there might be a cheaper way of making this itinerary happen.

Could someone tell me if the Railpass or individual tickets are a cheaper way of travelling in this area.

Thanks

The only way to be certain is to work out the cost of each journey and set this against the cost of the passes. Railpasses can be worthwhile (especially for travelling in the expensive UK), but it really does depend on how much rail travel you intend to do in a set period of time.

Hi I understand from previous posts I read months ago that the cheapest fares can be purchased at Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, situated on the Danube River, a 1 hour train ride from Vienna. We took a day trip several years ago, approx 10 Euro return ticket. We also took the train from Vienna to Prague, a very nice trip of 4.5 hours, the train goes through Bratislava.

Suggestion, catch train to Bratislava, stop and visit the city for 5 or 6 hours, purchase all remaining train tickets at the Bratislava Railway station and then catch the train onto Prage. I think trains run Vienna Prague every 2 or 3 hours throughout the day.

Good Luck,
Mike
