I am wanting to travel by 4WD from Broken Hill to Northern Flinders Ranges via Lake Frome. What route do you suggest and are any permits required. Two vehicles leaving in April or May 08

That area was a small part of a trip I did a few years back. But from Broken Hill I drove to Yunta to see the Panaramitee Rock Carvings then headed up north to Chambers Gorge (more rock carvings). From there I went to Lake Frome before heading up to Marree and the Birdsville Track.
I went through in January, which is a bit hotter than you'd get in April or May but it was a great part of the country. There's quite a few variations you can do as far as roads through there go. Keep in mind, some of the roads belong to oil and gas companies and aren't open to the public. Whether you need permits depends very much on which actual land you cross.
