is it uncommon to travel from cusco to Machu Picchu and back to cusco in one day? keep in mind that i am traveling by train.thankyou.

Many tourists do it in one day though an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu pueblo) is recommended.

i think that would be a really tough day. i think its possible, but not recommended. i believe that it is 4 hrs each way from cusco to agua calienties. plus, there is a chance that it could be foggy at machu pichu, and you will have gone all the way to peru and missed it. we made sure to have two days there just in case this happened. thankfully we had two beautiful days up there... and got to see almost every bit of it and it was fabulous!!

it's a very long trip - i would suggest staying in aguas calientes if you have the time. as noted by the previous poster, if you happen to get bad weather on your arrival at MP, you will be out of luck. When we finally arrived in AC, it was pouring rain and continued to rain the rest of the day. No MP for us until the following day. Also, if you stay overnight you can attempt to plan around the hoardes of tourists who usually arrive at MP in the early afternoon.

I did the trip in one day and if you are physically fit then it should not be a concern. i was there in November and the weather was great.

The train IS scheduled as such for one day excursions in Machu Picchu from Cuzco. Early morning down to Agua Caliente with waiting buses up M.P. then trains leaving in the afternoon. Depending on how much you like to cram and your fitness level, it would be hectic if you also want to climb Huayan Picchu that same day.

If you are still concerned about doing it in a day, there is a sea of tour guides that offer it and just shout out on the airport, "I need a guide." and about a dozen will run up and tell them thier sales pitch.

I have done it in one day (Cusco - Machu Picchu - Cusco). I arrived to Aguas Calientes at 12am, then go to Machu Picchu, and then took the train at 6pm to return to Cusco. I was tired but not problem.

This is quite a common trip that many tourists do in a full day. Goodluck & enjoy beautiful Peru!
