Self-catering is only usually cheaper than hotels/hostels if there is more than one of you. 280GBP is not much for a week's let (40GBP per night is not much at all, to be honest)

You might be lucky, but I think you will find it cheaper to stay in a hostel or, possibly, a bed & breakfast establishment (though 40GBP is not much for them either).
I think a hostel will be your best bet, although there are only 3 and none offer cooking facilities.. Explore what's available on:
