| Dubrovnik | Dubrovnik Port and Beaches Posted: Mon March 31, 2008 03:43 PM UTC
I am arriving on a Royal Caribbean cruise with my 3 sons (13, 12 & 9), my parents and my husband. After a bunch of site seeing days in Italy, we were hoping to relax with fun and sun. Could you please tell me where the Cruise ship port is located and how far that would be from any beaches in Dubrovnik? Some people recommended Banje beach. Do you know of a quick and easy way to get there from the port? I also noticed Lapad Bay at Hotel Kompas was mentioned by others, but I am not sure if it is open to the public. Any information you could provide in helping us to a relaxing beach day would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Our favorite beach during a visit to Dubrovnik was Copacabana beach. No swathes of sand but enough space and a few activities that your sons will enjoy.
http://www.croatia-beaches.com/family/dubrovnik_co The Lapad beach is bigger but we found it too crowded to enjoy, still it is worth exploring. The weblink states that Lapad beach is sandy but we only found the sand in the water, good for paddling though. I recommend a trip to Lopud island for a real treat, two beaches on the island, one in the main settlement is a mix of shale/sand and another-sunj bay- is a really good sandy beach. We did this as part of a three island tour which was a great day out. The three island tour will not give you the chance to explore all of Lopud and get on the beaches but you can decide which is best - a 3 island trip or stick to Lopud. Many operators offered this from the harbour where I guess you will dock but the one we took left from outside the Hotel Lapad and was great. This will be on the opposite side of the Graz harbour where I expect you will dock. Make sure you take beach shoes with you or buy them there and snorkel&mask for the boys. The beaches without sand are crystal clear and great for exploring.

Lapad Bay is open to the public. Overall, there are no private beaches as such in Croatia. It does get crowded, at least the part in front of the Hotel Park. I recommend walking from Hotel Kompas towards the outer part of the bay. There are some brilliant, secluded "rocks" where you can spend your day enjoying the sun& (very clean) sea. The trick is to get there early as that's the way to take up best spots. You can even leave your towels (to show that "the spot" is taken) and go for a lunch when you get hungry.

Hi A couple of years ago we stayed at the Argosy Hotel for 5 nights, there are a group of 5 hotels on the peninsula of which he Kompas is one, Argosy , President etc, a fabulous area and great European beaches ( little sand, mostly pebbles, we are from Australia). There is a large water slide for the kids, hire boats and floats . Bus service from Old Town every 20 minutes. I have some good photos of the beach on my Dubrovnik pages.
What month are you arriving, I expect the water will be cold during April. Good Luck, Mike
