| Madrid | September or October in Madrid and Barcelona Posted: Mon March 31, 2008 12:34 PM UTC
Would it be better to go to Barcelona and Madrid in September or October? What is the weather like in those months?
Is it a week enough in each city? Or should I spend more than a week in each city, with day trips to the nearby places (such as Toledo/Segovia, etc). |

Yes predicting the weather here is mission impossible...
Usually September is still "beach time" but not so hot as August so most bearable. October.. who knows BUT.... you should choose the week around Sept 24 in Barcelona. Why? Because is La Mercé festival, out biggest festival. Lots of activities of all kinds: traditional correfocs, castellers, street concerts and parades, fireworks, food and wine festival, etc. Be prepared for lots of fun and you will need lots of stamina. You can easily spend more than one week in each area, and there are lots of possible side trips. So, it really depends on your interests, available time and budget

Every August, Gràcia, neighbourhood in Barcalona holds an 8-day festival "Festa Major"
It is a great fiesta, the whole area is full of friendly decoreated streets, with live music, bands and lots of drinks such as beers and tequila’s. Dancing on the street locals go mad. It goes till deep in the night and it is not so super far located from the city center. There are little parades as well and firework. People dress up in scary looking costumes, such as devils. Every street has its own theme like Mexico or Cowboys etc. As for durations and daytrips. One week for Barcelona will give you a good overview. The first time I visit the city, as a student, we saw the city in 4 days, taking a day long for each area. These can be: Barrio Gothic, Eixample, Gaudipark, Montjuic. Seeing Barre Gothic, you can add a visit at the days end to Barceloneta, an original fishermans and workers area, with nice restaurants. Eixample is interesting for its Sagrada Familia and the gaudi houses, many of them within walking distance. Take one evening the time to have dinner or drinks at the Tibidabo, with a wonderful view over town. Daytrips? Famous is the mont serat monastery. As for Madrid, take one day for the Prado museum, half a day to visit the Royal Palace and have a coffee at the Placa near the Theatre. The neighbourhood of La Latina invites for scenic walks along the old streets. Take half a day to relax at the Retiro park, and see the old town – placa major. Alternatively get on one of the red tourist busses, you can get off and on the bus where you want and see the places more near. Daytrip to Segovia is the most memorable, at least I think, because it has a fairytale castle. Have fun!

As they said, it´s hard to say; but your best bet will probably be late September/early October. Early September is usually too hot while late October can be cold.

September and October are fine. Neither cold or hot.
One week in Madrid and another in Barcelona is good. I was born and live in Madrid. And I usually go once a year to Toledo and Segovia to spend a day because they are lovely places and not very far from Madrid. So, your choice and plan are both perfect!

Thank you all for replies, they were very helpful.
I'll be, for sure, in Barcelona during the week of the Fiesta de Merce. Muchas gracias!
