| Civitavecchia | Train from Civitavecchia to Termini Posted: Mon March 31, 2008 06:15 AM UTC
I am disembarking from a Carnival Freedom cruise on Tue 2 June 08. There has been mention of the simplicity of taking the train from the port to the Termini instead of booking a private transfer. Can anyone tell me how two of us with heavy bags get from our ship to the train station? If we needed a taxi to the train, might it then be better to organise some fellow cruisers for a shuttle transfer straight to Rome? Thanks for any replies.

You'll find this recent VT thread very useful:
http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-338470- You can walk to the station shuttle bus, or get a cab to the station. As you are staying in Rome (presumably) I'd take the train rather than a shuttle all the way to the city. You can spend what you save on even more gelati! :-))

Leic , what a great answer,.... save your money for gelati.. There is nothing more important to see or do in Italy than...........GELATO. Just try not to drool and make ga-ga baby noises as you look at the selctions. It can get sort of embarrassing.Seriously though, there should be a free shuttle from the boat to the station, then train it to Termini. Watch out for taxis and private transfers. They'll rip you off.

I don't drool.......I just go into a sort of blissful reverie....several times a day, for preference.... :-))
Since tasting the real stuff (Slovenia is pretty good too, btw) I don't bother with ice-cream in the UK.

Thank you both for your replies. Leics, the links were just what I wanted. We are staying over in Rome for a few days after the cruise - looks like gelato will have to be the order of the day, every day! Linda

More than once a day, surely? :-)
Small cono with two scoops = 2 euros (unless you are buying it somewhere ridiculously touristy). Therefore, trying 6 flavours a day is entirely feasible......there are so many flavours to test... Zuppa Inglese, straticella, tiramisu, nocciola, pistachio, limone...these are a few of my favourite things! :-)))

Well I thought we were looking for trasportation solutions or maybe .. gelato?
For the first question, remember you will find a free shuttle from harbour to station, for you and your luggage. There is a reliable and accetably fast train service to/from Roma-Civitavecchia, is more hassle than a a shuttle of course, and it takes from 55min to 1h20min, but is 4.20€- info and timetable:www.trenitalia.it A vital tip may be: chose the station depending on where are you staing in Rome. In fact, you might be able to avoid going to crowded Termini station where you have to walk from platform 23 (the further away) to the exit, about 1km. For example if you stay near S. Pietro or in the Trastevere area, you have a local station, far more comfortable. Now to the vital second question: where to find a good gelato. Well almost everywere.. but for those who want to go back and say "I had the unquestionable best"...you must go to San Crispino (Via Acaia - San Giovanni) Check: http://www.ilgelatodisancrispino.it/ It is widely recognized as the top in Rome, possibly in Italy, it is more expensive but a sensorial experience, let me know if you tried Excellent also: Pica (via della Seggiola - Campo de fiori) Tony (viale dei Colli Portuensi - Monteverde Nuovo) Gracchi (via dei Gracchi - Prati) Keep away from tourist ice cream like Blue ice, many spread around town!
