| Honolulu | Post NCL Cruise, What to do with baggage? Posted: Sun March 30, 2008 08:02 PM UTC
Hi everyone. Any suggestions on what to do with our luggage between disembarking from our cruise ship and hotel checkin? My wife and I are taking the 7 day Pride of America Cruise. When the ship returns to port in Honolulu, we disembark at 7am, however, our hotel check is not until 3PM that day. I though of renting a car just to have someplace to put our stuff.

It would be a pretty poor hotel who wouldn't store your bags until your scheduled check-in.
If you have a booking for the hotel, they will store your bags in a secure room until you come back to officially check in. I suggest you make contact with them now just to confirm they will do this, if they won't, then maybe you are staying at the wrong place! I have had to do this on numerous occasions and never had a problem. Hope this helps and enjoy your cruise

If you are planning to rent a car in Oahu, do you plan to fly out? If so, then take a cruise ship shuttle to the airport and rent a car at the airport rental agency, the cars are off the airport area, but the agents counters are in the luggage area of the airport. This way you can store your luggage in the trunk of the rental car. On the morning of the rental you will then be at the airport. Driving back to Waikiki area, you can stop at the Ala Moana Shopping Center, go to the food court and have a meal, shop around or go to Hilo Hattie's Store near the airport to get all your souvenirs of Hawaii, then head over to your hotel for the 3 PM check-in. When you leave Oahu, by air, you will be returning the car with no drop off charge at the airport. Remember that the costs for parking at a hotel vary, some are very steep. Aloha.

I agree that your hotel should store your bags for you until you can get into your room. Also I doubt you will be forced to disembark at 0700 hours. They probably won't even dock until 0600 hours and you can hang around the ship, if you want, until probably at least 1100 hours. If you are getting a car anyway I would book it for pick up at the pier and then put my stuff in the trunk and go see some sights then check in after 1500 hours.

I agree with the first response as regards your hotel allowing you to leave your luggage prior to checking in. I would add that while the checkin time is 3pm, many hotels will permit you to arrive some hours prior to that. I have regularly been given my room as much as five hours before the designated time. If they have a room ready it is no loss to them to let you in early.

Hi
Depending on how big the luggage is ..At the Ala Moana Shopping Center there are lockers for public use..If you don't have a vehicle to put personal belongings in, use an Ala Moana locker. Lockers are available next to the main restrooms on the street level. Please hold onto the paper that the automated machine provides; it includes a number code that you need to use in order to open your locker. You've probably already returned home from your trip, but I had to reply to this chain of comments.
NEVER EVER leave anything of value in the trunk of your car, on the seat of your car, in the console, under the seats, etc. Thieves watch for trusting tourists in rented cars and will wait until you are out of sight, looking at the great view, and in less that two minutes they will have broken into your car and taken off with all your valuables. I stopped at a scenic lookout to take a photo on a particularly clear day, and saw a group of tourists park their car, open the trunk, and put their wallet and purses into the trunk. I stopped them and told them to take those things with them because of the high crime rate (and the fact that they did this in plain view of anyone staking out the parking lot). It may be a minor inconvenience to take your stuff with you when you're only stopping to take a photo or eat lunch, but compare that to having to deal with a lost driver's license (how are you going to board the plane?), stolen credit cards to cancel, lost money and traveler's checks, lost cameras with all your vacation photos, etc.
