WHAT IS THE BORDER OF SPAIN NEAR LOURDES? Posted: Sun March 30, 2008 09:44 AM UTC
WE WOULD LIKE TO VISIT A PART OF SPAIN WHILE IN LOURDES. CAN ANYONE
TELL ME THE NAME OF THE SPANISH TOWN OR WHATEVER IS THE PLACE THAT BORDERS
SPAIN AND LOURDES, FRANCE? HAS ANYONE TRIED GOING TO THE SPANISH BORDER FROM
LOURDES? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY ADVICE.

We have crossed the border several times and will be doing it again next week. But never at a point that has statrted from Lourdes!
First of all you need a very good map of the area - one that shows steep inclines, tunnels etc. The Recommended Michelin route takes you back up to Pau, then south.
www.viamichelin.com
But I would think of considering heading NW from Lourdes along D 937 and D35 to join join up with D934 south to the Border.
I have not travelled this route so don't know of any special hazards or good points to watch out for. Study the map and use viamichelin to look at the alternative routes.
On a clear day it should be a good trip with great view and look out for the birds of prey circling above - specially in forested areas and often in early evening before dusk.

The Irun crossing is good and the one we have done mostly. But it depends how far you want to travel and if you are going just to "do it" or want to spend some time in Spain when you get there. Another important factoris when you plan to travel. The route I considered in my first reply , going west from Lourdes via Lestelle Betharram and down the D934 would take you over the Col du Poutalet at the border crossing. It is 1794 metres and at this time of the year is sometimes closed because of snow.
We have used weather forecasts and looked for road signs for notices of closures when travelling in the first three months of the year.
By the way the viamichelin route mentioned takes you into a mountain town called Sallent de Gallego - probably not much there - google it to see if it gets a hit. The journey would be 57 miles but could take nearly two hours.

I took a tour bus trip to a town called Gavarnie just over the border in Spain, it was a really relaxing trip through beautiful mountain scenery.
