Stockholm SL 72-hour Travel card
Posted: Sun March 30, 2008 01:33 AM UTC
I read from the internet that the 72 hour travel card include admission to Grona Lund. I am going to stockholm from April 4-8. Is that true that the park is closed?

Moreover, what are the other free admission or discount that are given with the 72 hour card. There is a post long time ago saying that it will also give 50% to Skasen, is this still the case?

Many thanks!

Hi!
Gröna Lund opens for the 2008 season April 26. If you are a tivoli freak like me you should know that this amusement park is very small and more cute and beautifully situated than thrilling. Maybe best for small children and yearning teenagers. And yes, as already seems to be your plan, visit Skansen instead, also on Djurgården, an outdoor park with Northern wild animals and Swedish folklore. A bit old-fashioned and a bit nationalistic, but culturally an unique aim of the last century politicians to keep and protect Swedish rural culture and habits in times of centralization and industrialization.

There are two 72 hour cards in Stockholm. One is the Stockholm card and the other is the SL 72 hour travel card. Both are avaiable for shorter time as well.

The 72 h Stockholm card gives you free fares on metro and buses and free fares with the ferry to Djurgården from Nybroplan. The other ferry to Djurgården, from Slussen, is not included in this card, something that from time to time causes a bit of discussion. The ferry from Slussen is free only with the SL travel card described below. The entrance to Skansen is free with the Stockholm card and many other museums and attractions are included as well. Price for adults 61,38 € and children 23,28€. Check out on:

The plain 72 hour SL travelling card includes all metro, bus and tramfares including the ferry over to Djurgården from Slussen and the tram to Djurgården from Norrmalmstorg. The SL 72 h card costs for adults 21, 16 €. Using travelcards, you can travel as much as you like, regardless of zone boundaries, but this card has no free entrances to museums and such. Have a great time in Stockholm!

Hmm, I checked the SL page and there was nothing about any free admissions. But I may have missed it. Or, maybe they used to have it before. SL changed their rates and cards awhile ago. Or, maybe they keep it a secret until 72-hour SL card purchase, as a nice surprise on card delivery, but that seems pretty unlikely these days :-)

I asked some ticket vendors at some train stations and they all say that there's no discount with the SL travel card and that it only applies to public transportation.

Hi Cynthia
You are probably already in Stockholm. :)

http://www.fodors.com/world/europe/sweden/stockholm/travel_tip_1774865.html
according to this website, it appears that 3 attractions are included with the card, i.e. Skansen, Grona Lund Tivoli and Kaknas Tower.

However, on SL 's own website, it is not mentioned.

regards

Hi Cynthia!

Too late for you now I know, but it certainly used to be the case that the 72-hr card gave a 50% discount at Skansen, and free entry to Gröna Lund, the TV Tower and Tram Museum. We have certainly made use of some of these discounts in the past. However, as already remarked above, the SL website makes no mention of these now (and it did before), so we can only assume that these concessions have been withdrawn. However, it is still valid on the Waxholmsbolaget's Djurgårdsfärjan ferry between Djurgården, Skeppsholmen and Slussen, and the hertiage tram line between Norrmalmstorg and Djurgården, which Stockholm card is not. So I still think that it is pretty good value for money, despite the recent price rise to 200 kronor.

Also, it is not so well known that you can use the SL card to get to and from Arlanda airport. You just get a train to Märsta and bus 583 from there. It takes less than an hour from Stockholm C to Arlanda T5, and costs nothing with a SL card. Maybe I should write a VT tip about that!

Have fun

Andrew
