West Yorkshire Student accommodation in Leeds
Posted: Sat March 29, 2008 04:49 PM UTC
My daughter, 23, is going to attend for a postgraduate course in University of Leeds. She has 3 options for accommodation:
1) Near University - 2) In the city centre - 3) In the suburbs.
Is there any advice about best choice regarding the trouble for moving, the dangers of moving especially at night or any other thing must take into consideration. Also, any other advice or suggestion about accommodation is highly appreciable. Thanks in advance

Your daughter will get a great deal of information about accommodation from the university itself. She should contact them as soon as possible to find out what is available, and to get advice.

http://www.leeds.ac.uk/accommodation/

If she is attending as an international postgraduate, and is new to Leeds (which I assume is the case) then the university guarantees accommodation in the university. She must apply for this accommodation by 1st July.

Details here:

http://www.leeds.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective_students.html

Leeds University is not very near to the city centre, so your daughter must consider travelling expenses (and travelling time) if she intends to live further away.

It is better for international students to live near to their university, or in university accommodation, so that they can more easily make friends and take part in activities.

Hello, I did an MA in Leeds a couple of years ago.

The single best piece of advice I think I can give is to use this site (at least to get some initial ideas):

http://www.unipol.org.uk/leeds/

It's a site where your daughter can respond to ads from landlords and students looking to share a house, as well as posting a 'looking for' ad of her own. Unipol is a body that vets houses for students in Leeds and I would strongly recommend going with one of their landlords.

I was a student in London first and houses there were rented as a whole unit. In Leeds it is far more common for each tenant to have an individual contract with the landlord. This means that you have no control over who moves in with you, so it makes sense to find a landlord with high standards. She should meet the landlord to see the property and get as much detail on the other tenants as possible.

Leeds always seemed like a safe city to me. However, students are a lot more visible here (than in London and other big cities) and they can be targetted for crimes like phone theft. The day I moved in, the areas around Headingley and the main campus there was a police presence which was threatening or reassuring depending on how you view it!

About areas... most students live within walking distance of Leeds. Usually to the north of the main campus. I lived in Headingley which is extremely popular with students and a nice, safe place to be. Other areas closer to uni are cheaper - like Hyde Park - but tend not to be so nice. If you can find somewhere safe, though, there's really no reason not to do this if you prefer. These aren't dangerous areas.

The city definitely does have some rough and deprived residential areas (mainly to the south) but you won't come across these unless you make the effort of going to them. Some student accommodation is offered here (Beeston for example) so if anything seems strangely cheap, check out the area.

The city centre is too dear for most students but if she can afford it, this isn't a bad option.

http://www.upmystreet.com/ - good info about postcodes.

Drop me an email if you'd like any more info.

I went to Leeds University (long time ago now - so my knowledge is well and truly out of date). The advice you have been given is very good - yes the University itself should be your first point of contact. The main campus of the University is only a mile from the City centre, and most of the student accommodation used to be either close to the campus or further out on the north-west. I lived in Headingley for two years, which was along walk - but do-able, and in my first year I was in a Hall of Residence which was around four miles out.
