San Diego Lawrence Welk villas in escondido
Posted: Fri March 28, 2008 05:18 PM UTC
I'm researching the above location for a Thanksgiving visit.

Can I get an idea of the climate there in November and December?
Also, we are a family of three with an 8 year old girl, non golfers all. Would this resort seem appropriate for us? We are visiting family in the area, so we wouldn't be there 24/7.
Has anyone stayed here and can offer a review?

I have never been there, but know somebody who owns a timeshare there. The weather will be excellent during that time. You be some distance from most San Diego things, but the Wild Animal Park is close and well worth the visit. Legoland is not to far and might be fun for the 8 year old. The grounds are nice, but if you don't play golf there isn't much to do on property.

We stayed here about 15 years ago. We used it as a base for trips in the area. We were visiting family who lived in San Diego as well as seeing the sights.

The facility was really very nice. Our accomodations were a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment type unit. With a large living room area and large kitchen and also full sized washer and dryer. It was a luxury suite. The resort has activities it sponsors on various days, but we did not participate in any of them. We really didn't use any of the amenities either, but it was very comfortable.

It is an hour or so from San Diego. We visited in October - it's Southern California, the weather was fine, although we happened to be there during a rare rainy day.

We visited:
Mt. Palomar observatory, with a viewing area of the telescopes and a small museum with a brief film;
La Jolla;
the San Diego Zoo;
Old Town San Diego;
Palm Springs, we liked the Aerial Tramway to the San Jacinto Peak, there was a tiny bit of snow on the ground when we went in October and it was cold, in the 30s, although Palm Springs was warm;
the Algodones Sand Dunes and the Salton Sea;
Coronado Island;
Cabrillo Nat'l Monument;
and Sunset Cliffs.

We thought it was a good place to stay.

If you have interest in live theater I'd recommend one of the most unique and best-loved features of the Welk Resort San Diego is their intimate 339 seat threatre, which includes a museum with memorabilia highlighting the life and career of legendary band leader Lawrence Welk. Every year, the Welk Resort Theatre is home to top-notch talent, performing Broadway style musicals such as "Forever Plaid" and "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change!".

A sumptuous buffet is also available before each performance at the Canyon Grille Restaurant, featuring carved meats, fresh fish, poultry and a variety of salads. This makes an evening at the resort an easy way to eat a nice meal and see live theater.

The weather in Escondido during Novemeber and December is reported on the average as:
November 74° High 47° Low
December 70° High 42° Low

I'd say the weather is usually a bit cooler during the day, most of the time, maybe in the mid to low 60's, sometimes (rarely) rainy, but in general a bit cooler than the suggested average.

Besides that which has been mentioned, Lawrence Welk has a pool with water slide, but this might not be a big draw at that time of year, unless you experience one of the hotter days.

Lawrence Welk Resort is located amidst the trees and hills of Escondido This resort is in a more "countryfied" section of San Deigo and not at the hub of the area.

However, when not visiting relatives, I'm sure you will find plenty of interesting things to see and do in and around the area.

In Escondido, there are lakes where fishing is popular, a few shopping areas such as North County Fair, wineries, Orfilia and Rancho Bernardo. Oh, and for the daughter, a pretty interesting sculpture park, "Queen Califia's Magical Circle" is situated in Kit Carson Park.

Escondido is especially known for it's artistic bent and besides, antique shops, galleries and restaurants, there are several live theater venues, including the very popular, California Center for the Arts, Escondido

MODE, The Museums of Downtown Escondido, include the Children's Museum which might interest your daughter as well as the Mingei International Museum. My granddaughter liked it quite a lot, especially since I gave her a "throw-a-way" camera to take photos with.
