| Lhasa | Can I still go to Tibet in April? Posted: Fri March 28, 2008 02:36 PM UTC
I have plan on landing in Beijing April 15. Will I still be able to go to Tibet, as planned, later in the month?
I have absolutely no political agenda -- just a desire to see regular tourist sites. |

Currently Tibet is closed to foreigners, in fact all visitors I suppose, including Chinese. The situation changes daily, but I imagine you'd be better off re-working your travel agenda.
Here is UK government advice: " Following widespread unrest, including violent protests in the city of Lhasa, Tibet and in some Tibetan areas of the provinces of Sichuan and Qinghai and at Xiahe in Gansu in China, the situation remains tense. The Chinese authorities have said there is no curfew in force in Lhasa, but they have also said that they will not process applications for travel to Tibet at this time. We are also aware of reports that the Chinese authorities are preventing travel to Tibetan areas of Gansu, Sichuan and Qinghai Provinces. You should not attempt to travel to Tibet without permission from the Chinese authorities. " Also there are lots of rumours about Chinese tourist visas in general.

Its closed and there are almost no ways in right now (even illegal ways are hard). You need a permit to go there the legal way and they aren't handing them out. Most of the backward ways in have roadblocks.... As bad as I want to see tibet all my chinese friends insist I stay away. So if I were you I would listen to both the prc and everyone around you and avoid tibet... at least until mid may.

According to today's Associated Press, group tourist permits for Tibet will be issued again starting on May 1st.
See http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h5Z6bJwtN_roGSI "While Tibet and neighboring regions remain off-limits to most travelers, the region's tourist authority has decided to allow Chinese tour groups to return on April 10 and foreign groups on May 1 - the start of a three-day national holiday - according to travel agents who received the announcement on Tuesday."
