When I was there over the weekend, many places were closed on Sunday, but some cafes, restaurants, bars and shops were open late in the morning and closed early in the evening.

1stly please be aware that "IRELAND" and Northern Ireland are 2 different Countries not one country Northern Ireland is Part of the United Kingdom (England,Scotland,wales,NI=U.K) the south is commonly called the Republic Of Ireland, the currency is the euro in the Republic and UK Pounds in Northern Ireland so you will need some Pounds for your trip over the Border most shops in belfastwill b closed but there are alot of shops that stay open i have only been in Belfast once on a sunday (I'm from Northern Ireland)

Some of the responses you have received are incorrect. Most shops/stores are in fact open, though typically the hours range from 9am - 6pm.
Another thing which you might have to consider is the number of trains that operate on a Sunday. Go here for more information;

Everything will NOT be closed on Sundays, its very much business as usual albeit the shops are only open from 12 - 6pm on Sundays.

Bars,restaurants and entertainment venues will all be open as normal.

trust me i know, i live in Belfast, maybe 10 years ago everything would have been closed but these days everything is the same as any big city in the UK.
