Hue was pleasant surprise for us. I would recommend visiting for a couple of days, or at least one to visit the outlying tombs/palaces built by the previous dynasties. There are a number of companies that run day tours, many including lunch on the boat. Don't be afraid to go by small boat. Sometimes the experience is better with less people. While your in Hue, your not too far from Hoi An, another must see in the region.
There are buses and trains that head down south from Ho Chi Minh, but another option, if you flying into, and out of Ho Chi Minh, is to get a cheap flight from Vietnam Airways down to Hue, then work your way back up north. In the north, Halong Bay and Sapa are the usual stops, and we really liked both.

Oops, I always get Hanoi and Hu Chi Minh mixed up. I'm sure the same applies from Hu Chi Minh. I didn't get down to the south, sorry.

I was in Hue last December and i liked it. A little south there is Hoi An, also a very nice little town. There you can check out the My Son temples.
I don't know how long it takes from HCMC to get to Hue, but I guess pretty long by bus. How much time do you have in Vietnam? I did the Central Highlands, it's great and you see the real Vietnam. Left HCMC and went to the beach in Mui Ne, from there to Dalat and from there I did a 5 day trip through the Highland up to Hoi An. You can do this trip with the Easy Riders (Motorbike). They're great!! But if you don't have that much time, check out Vietnam Airlines, they fly up to Hue. Have fun

Ohh, Stephan is right, if you have more time... Sapa is a must!! I just loved it. Did it by night train from Hanoi. Halong Bay is very nice too.
Well, it all depends on the time you have!! I did all the way from the south to the north in 3 weeks

You could do a day tour, but bear in mind that Hue is half way up the country so flying would be the only option. I have done (for business) the early morning flight and returned on the late afternoon a couple of times. If your only in Saigon for a few days I would stick to closer day trips, mekong etc

Take flight to Hue as what Jonny advised. No other option for a daytrip!
If you have 4 nights in Saigon, please take some time to cover floating market in Can Tho by staying one night in Can Tho. If you wish to explore Mekong further, can take a package 2day/1night cruise with Bassac. Hope I am not too late with this message. Cheers and have fun/KoolJ
