| Vienna | Day trip from Vienna to see Austria's hills/mountains - what are the options? Posted: Fri March 28, 2008 10:30 AM UTC
Hi there.
My girlfriend and I are going to be in Vienna end of April for several days. And we are trying to figure out if there is any chance for a day trip from Vienna to catch a glimps of picturesque mountains. But looking on the map it seems that Vienna is quite far away from any such spots. The only option I found was a trip by Semmering railway that takes you through some beautiful scenery. Would any of you know of any place in a sensible distance that can be reach by train/bus that has scenery worth going for? Overnight accommodation is, unfortunatelly out of question, so we have to be back in Vienna the same day. Zalek |

Hey ;)
Very nice idea :)) The best one in my opinion is "Schneeberg" ("snow mountain") - but please take warm clothes with you!! Its about 1 and a half hours from Vienna. You have to take a train to the village "Puchberg" and there a 100 year old "Zahnradbahn" (rack railway) starts to bring you to the top of the mountain. You will have a very nice view and (!be quick and) ask at the middle station(you will stop for 15 minutes) for "Buchteln" with vanillia sauce, great austrian pastry ;) It would be best to aks at a railway station in vienna for reservations - cause sometimes the trains to the top of "Schneeberg" are sold out! For trains Vienna-Puchberg see: http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp pictures: http://www.satellite-sightseer.com/id/8873/Austria there are other mountais too: "Rax" or "Semmering" but I personally think this one is the nicest ... and: On clear days you have a view on Vienna from the top ;)

Hi,
I agree to heksli's proposal (also to the "Buchteln"-meal), but would also recommend the second choice, the "house mountain of the Viennese", "Rax" ! Rax is a mountain equal to the "Schneeberg", but with the advantage of a funicular, bringing you in about 8 minutes to the top in an altitude of 1600 meters above sealevel. You start your journey at Vienna's "South Station" ("Südbahnhof") taking a train to Payerbach-Reichenau.You'll be in Payerbach in about 1.5 hours, The trains on the busy south-track can be caught every 30 minutes. So you could easily take a roundtrip and spend a beautiful day in the Austrian Alps ! Have a nice stay!

Manish had better study an atlas, Queensland is in Australia, Queenstown is in New Zealand - and neither has anything to do with Austria!

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I haven't decided yet which mountain (though I'm leaning towards the one with the transport up to the top) but I'm already happy I will have a good peak at Austria's mountains. Thanks a lot for taking the time to write it all down for me.

Hi 2 years ago we took a day trip by 4 wheel drive, driver included into the Alpine Lakes district through country where the movie of the Von Trapp family was made with Julie Andrews, we stopped for 2 hours at a very beautifull small town of Hallstatt on the lake, simply magnificent. We booked the tour from a Tourist Office Information Centre in Vienna. Have a look at Hallstatt pages on VT.
Good Luck, Mike
