All Seasons is in Sathorn Road, a 5 minute walk to 2 skytrain stations, 5 minutes by skytrain to the river pier where you can get the Chao Phrya Express boat to Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Chinatown etc etc. 15 minute walk to Lumpini Park and Suan Lum night bazaar, 10 minutes to Silom Road night market.
Other good boutique hotels are Triple Two Silom, La Residence.

I stayed at Baiyoke Sky when I went in Dec 07. It was a very good experience. We had booked a room in the space zone so we had our room on the 72nd floor. The room was absolutely stunning and we had many freebies since we had booked an expensive room. The night market is just outside of Baiyoke and the hotel in itself is a shopping centre for some floors. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly. There are many shops very near the hotel as well. The wats are also not very far - but you will need a taxi to take you there.

I have given a detailed description on my travelpage. You can read it here

Last time I was in Bangkok I stayed in the Manhatten Hotel (Sukhumvit Soi 15) - definitely would NOT recommend it unless you like your cockroaches climbing the curtains, but on the corner of Soi 15 and Sukhumvit there was a really cool looking hotel just by the overpass. Does anyone know the name of it?

I suspect you might be referring to the S15 Hotel. Here's its website: http://www.s15hotel.com/

The Shianghai Inn is a lovely little boutique hotel in Chinatown, which is very central and close to train and river transport.

Boutique hotels and their homepages are presented here http://traveltobangkok.blogspot.com/search/label/Boutique%20Hotels. This blog also describes the markets in Bangkok and how to get there. You will find a map with search for street names in English. So you can see, whats close to your hotel and what not. Also you will find what you have to know about boat transports on Cjao Phraya River and the Klongs.
