Rome Rome hotels and things to do
Posted: Thu March 27, 2008 09:47 PM UTC
I am looking for a hotel in Rome June 16 - 22. Traveling there as a family - Dad, Mom, 21 and 18 year old sons. Not sure of the best location to be looking in for easy access to sites, safety, places to eat and go at night. Any recommendations of location and specific hotels would be appreciated.

Also, if you have suggestions for things to do in and within reasonable travel from Rome beyond the "usual" tourist things, that would appeal to young men 18 and 21, I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks!

I found this to be a great location:
Hotel: Federici B&B Viale Giulio Cesare 151 Rome 39-06-39737110 Fax 39-06-775-91877 B&B located in neat residential and shopping area and restaurants north of the Vatican (pretty at night). When I checked in was greeted at door by Fabio and met Federici. Sparse room, ceiling fan, TV, tiny shower - but VERY clean and functional. The breakfast each morning was included in the price and abundant. The metro stop is just steps away from the entrance. I highly recommend using the metro to get around Rome - fast, clean and efficient (a little humid during hot weather). http://www.italialodging.com/est/federici/
You may be able to book a couple of rooms there cheaper than one room at a large hotel. Sorry cannot think of something that your sons would be interested in doing as I utilized Avventure Bellissime and took walking tours with them. Small groups and interesting facts. Ciao!

The Hotel Portoghese has a family apartment that sleeps four comfortably, just N of Piazza Navona. Great eats nearby at the Old Bear, great wine shop a few doors down, great take away place a few more doors down. Happening night action just W of Piazza Navona, plus by Campo d' Fiore, especially for 18 to 21 (wish I was young again). Karl

WE booked an apartment near the Trevi Fountain/Spanish Steps through RomeRents.com. They have many choices in all areas. We found our family of 7 (including one teen-ager) were engaged by the old Roman Forum, Colliseum, etc. The neighborhoods and checking out the population was also intriguing. We didn't do much beyond the tours because we had only 3 days.

Look into the Hotel Del Corso. I really loved it there. It is near everything.

Greetings, I'm not sure when you're going but check out these few sites for lodging info, in addition to the regular hotel sites like Hotels.com, Expedia.com , etc. (I've used both, not bad prices if you book in advance, but also check Venere.com and rentalinrome.com ) I myself am using rentalinrome for my upcoming lodging for the next few weeks and they have a great selection of low-mid-high cost apartment rentals that are a lot less expensive than the clean, spacious-modern hotels.

For the boys, if there into cars, AND if you're going in April, there's an exhibition going on about cars - some fantastic old-new Ferrarri's on display called: The Legend of Speed, Art, Motorization & Society in 20th century Italy, at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Nazionale 194 (it's only 12.50 euro tix cost, phone 06 3996 7500. Not sure how long it's to be there, but google it or the museum and you should find the info) Also, Castel Sant'Angelo museum (Lungo Tevere 50, National Museum of St Angelo) has the largest collection of militaria and arms IN THE WORLD, so they might enjoy that, too!

All the Piazza's have nightlife galore for the younger crowds, and Testaccio area of Trastevere is geared toward young, too. But even there you'll find a lot of mixed crowds of both young and old alike. Then there's the Porta Portese Flea Market, Pyramid of Caius (S of Aventine Hill at Porta Ostiense), Forum Romano, Colosseum, etc, or even a 1-1.5 hr train ride to Naples and Pompeii.

Just a few thoughts...
~ciao

Hi. I'll be staying in Rome for 6 nights in July and will be booking an apartment. They are quite cheap, ours is only 89 euro a night, and have everything you need including space for 2 adult guys! I'm going through rentalinrome, which have heaps of apartments all over Rome. I'm also staying in travestere which is further out but, apparently, out of the tourist zone and in more authentic Italy! If your happy to walk then have a look there.
Good luck!
Kelly
