I would definitely take him for a 1-hour boat ride across the archipielago ... these are so much fun! Perhaps someone could suggest one of the nice stops along the boat route to get off and explore. I accidentally erased a group of my photos one of which contained the name of the place where we got off.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to go sailing before going to the Vasa, so he won't be worried about the boat sinking! There is also a park with these fantastic jumping "things". They look like huge rubber bands hanging from high sticks - there are about four in a little group, and kids sit in these things and jump real high! I do wish I remember exactly where these are, but it is a large park located from the train station, near where we stayed, towards Gamla Stan. Perhaps someone can better explain where it is!

Gröna Lund. If time allows it you could take him to Birka (an island with viking stuff).

Hi!
Stockholm is a very children friendly town, so you have chosen the right spot! Many of the culture institutions have special programmes for children so just choose a space of your interest and check out what children activities there are. Me and my children (snd adult) friends all enjoy the National Museum of Science and technology (Tekniska museet). It is very user-friendly oriented and interactive. In the museum´s science centre, Teknorama, you get to try loads of thrilling experiments, at your own pace of course. All for fun, no educational stress here :-) There are permanent and temporary exhibitions, usually very spectacular and fun. In writing time the temporary exhibitions include International Space Station, ISS. Visitors are welcome to feel what it’s like to be an astronaut for a day! The permanent part include many interesting gadgets and examples of Swedish inventions, Uno Miltin´s huge model railway, mining-explorations, a machine hall and much much more... Homepage: http://www.tekniskamuseet.se/templates/StartPage.aspx?id=13327 In August you can go swimming in the lakes as well. There are many children friendly beaches in the Stockholm city centre. It can be an experience in itself to feel the luxury of clean water so close by. I think the recreating island of Långhholmen has a nice combination of nature and culture, with the exiting old prison to visit, a small sandy beach and many cafés. Metro Hornstull and walk for about 15 minutes. The Stockholm town homepage has good tips especially for children, both museums and outdoor parks and activities.
