3.20 euro, each way, according to the Circumvesuviana website. Trains leave every half hour during the day and take just over an hour. A typical schedule is
NAPOLI - GARIBALDI (STAZIONE CENTRALE F.S.) dep 09:40 SORRENTO arr 10:47 Bill

Oh, and Napoli/Garabaldi is not the last stop on the Circumvesuviana--it's Napoli Porta, which doesn't take you ANYWHERE. So be sure you get out @ Garabaldi, which is the second to last stop.
3.20 Euro is exactly what I paid last Sunday to go from Sorrento to Naples. I then took a train to Rome to catch my flight home the next day--only to find out later there's plenty of comfy coach transpo from Sorrento directly to Rome. The Circumvesuviana looks like New York Subway trains in the 80s, kinda run down and loaded with graffiti. But the price is right, and it's totally reliable, taking you right to Napoli and Pompeii

"only to find out later there's plenty of comfy coach transpo from Sorrento directly to Rome"
Please tell us more about this...the website that we usually use for interreggional transportation - www.italybus.it - shows only two buses daily, one that leaves Sorrento at 6:45 a.m. (arr at Roma Tiburtina at 9:45 a.m.), and another that leaves Sorrento at 5:00 p.m. (arr at Roma Tiburtina at 9:00 p.m.). There is also one that leaves on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 5:45 p.m., at least until May 31st. Do you have more info? Bill

Unfortunately, yours is the same info as mine. However, I spoke with some ladies from Leeds, Yorkshire who told me they had jumped on an excursion coach in Rome that was taking tourists on a day trip. The coach company allowed them to pay for a ride like bus passengers. I think the agency was called "Enjoy Rome" but I'm not sure.
Anyway, it sounded a lot better than taking the milk run to Naples, then changing trains. Oh...and check out what I did, People! When I got to Naples, I just wanted to get on the next train to Rome, so I bought a ticket in the machine, didn't feel like digging out my old lady reading glasses, so just pressed all the right buttons. Well, I ended up on the ***Eurostar***!! What should have been about a 25 dollar biglietto cost closer to $60.00!!! I should put this in VT travel tips: but all trains in Italy are not created equal. It was a nice ride, but I'd rather have saved my money for other things! Regards, Anja

Ah, so it was a tour company that happened to sell tickets to people for transportation only...that certainly happens...but you can't depend on it (or the price, which is surely made up on the spot, depending on how desperate the company and/or the would-be passengers are). "I should put this in VT travel tips: but all trains in Italy are not created equal. It was a nice ride, but I'd rather have saved my money for other things!" Yep! When money and/or time are important, it's good to know the differences of the train types in Italy...at least you got back to Rome a lot faster (twice as fast for Naples to Rome, as I recall)...
