Budapest Best place to stay and to eat and drink
Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 11:47 PM UTC
Hi,

Me and a friend are going to Budapest for 4 or 5 days in June and we were wondering which area should we stay in and what restaurants, bars and discos do you recommend?

We don't want tourist places, we rather mingle with the locals and enjoy the local culture and gastronomy.

Thanks in advance.

The areas that I'd recommend is in districts V, VI, or VII. I believe that if you get a place, you want to still be able to access it if you need to have a nap after a heavy Hungarian meal, or need to change after enjoying a spa, The typical tourist will spend at least two-thirds of their time on the Pest side and most likely somewhere in the aforementioned districts so if you get something within decent walking distance of the metros or the 4/6 tram which runs around the korut, it'll be very beneficial to maximizing your time getting around using public transport.

I don't know your age and what kind of scene you'd like, but let me put forth that some of the places to see are the kerts (beer gardens) and romkocsma (ruin-pubs), most of which are in V, VI, and VII as well. Some of these on this list are places I frequent: http://wikitravel.org/en/Budapest/Pest#Drink. (although Kultiplex and West Balkan have closed) Some others that aren't mentioned are: Szimpla (szimpla.hu), Kuplung on Király utca, and Corvinteto (corvinteto.com) On the Buda side there's A38 ship (a38.hu) and Zold Pardon (zp.hu) There's also a 24 party club scene going on Hajogyari Island in III which you may be interested in.

Some of the places mentioned above have respectable food offerings, additionally peruse through the English language food blog chew.hu's top 33. They try to have a cross-section of the best restaurants that represent Bp, not just the top posh ones.

Have a look through my Budapest tips. Sure they contain some touristic places too, but you will have an idea of places worth visiting and restaurants worth trying. Most of the attractions you will find in old city center. Around that area you can have the best food and nightlife. Enjoy your stay in Budapest.

We looked in Booking.com for hotels in the 5th, 6th and 7th districts and the best prices with wireless lan included (we need internet for work) are this:

http://www.booking.com/hotel/hu/king-apartments.html (240€ for 4 nights for a studio)

http://www.booking.com/hotel/hu/budapest-apartment-4.html (220€ for 4 nights for a studio)

Do you think they are well located and the price is right?
