| Hurghada | travel from Hurghada to Luxor Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 03:00 PM UTC
Hello guys,
I am leaving for Hurghada in two days. I am so excited. I am going with a group of 15 divers from Croatia. I would love to go to Luxor by myself or perhaps with some of my friends, but I read a lot of things about tourist travelling by public busses. So, can it be done? What would you reccomend me? The agency proposed us a day tryp and it costs 60 EUR....I believe it is too expensive. Can somebody tell me the time schedules ( I would return the same day). How much does it cost? Best regards Martina |

Hi,
The distance Hurghada-Luxor is about 290 kms (one way) on a beautiful, but not very busy desert-highway.Due to security reasons tourist-buses are usually accompanied by a police-car. I would recommend to take the official day-tour, as renting a car is difficult, much costlier and less safe ! Enjoy Egypt and Diving, have a safe trip!

Martina,
I may be taking the same rout in a few weeks. Please post in this thread if you were about to do this and how the experience was. Thanks. :)

You can use any cheap public transportation at any time. However better to have more privacy; since you are going to have double way trip, I would advise you to hire a mini airconditioned bus of maximum 15 pax (passengers) or an H1 for maximum 10 pax with a good driver, at least to draw you nearer to the sites. I mean not to search for more local taxis at the destinations that you intend to visit.
Just an idea. Welcome to Egypt! Best of luck (~_~)

well, I returned this morning home. From what I can say, one day in Luxor starting from Hurghada is a lot of running. There are some agencies offering the trip for 55 $, but our agency guide told us it is not a good idea because, for example, they might take you to the Valley of the Queens, not Kings...Don't even think to rent a car! They are drive like maniacs! We all go together in convoys (that day ONLY 60 buses together). The transportation (the agency bus-60 EUR) came to pick up at 5 am in front of the hotel and around 11 we reached Luxor. I had some nice experience with local people, but the ones that are not in the TOURIST business. Keep in mind that there are a lot of really poor people and they will try to get your money....Don't need to be scared, they won't be aggressive and take your wallet, but...for example...jump when you take a photo and demand money for it or...what happened to my friend: he wanted to take a photo on a camel, just that. At the end he ended up very far from our bus and the animal owner demanded 50 EUR to put him down! It ended in the way that he paid 20 EUR, so be careful.
Hope I have been of help
