| Cancún | cigarettes and marijuana Posted: Tue March 25, 2008 11:55 PM UTC
I have heard that marijuana and other drugs were legalized in Mexico but I can't find out much on the internet. It isn't that big of a deal to me but it would be fun if it was legal - I don't want to take any chances if it is illegal. Secondly, can you buy U.S. cigarettes in Mexico? If not, how many packs am I allowed to bring in with me?
Thank you in advance for your help. |

they were going to legalize marijuana but then Vicente Fox decided against it.
you can buy US cigarettes in mexico, so the question you should be asking is "how many am i allowed to bring home?" because they're cheaper.

"I don't want to take any chances if it is illegal" - then don't...the drug gang wars are racking up a lot of casualties among the gangs, the police, the army, and innocent civilians...steer as clear as you can...we in Texas hear about this on a daily basis...

marijuana is not legal there. It passed Mexican legislation but Bush forced Fox to veto it. You can bring back at least 2 cartoons. However, buy a cartoon when you get there & when you leave 2 at the airport duty free shop, they will either seal it or bring it to the plane. You will have plenty of time for them to get it to your plane if thats the case.

Unless you want to spend some time in the murky judicial system here in Mexico and also experience the prison do NOT buy or smoke pot, do NOT as a foreigner do peyote or any other drugs. You will see lots of locals, just like in the US, smoking mota, doing coke and club drugs. They may not get in trouble- you will! The cops and citizens are very tense about the so called "war on drugs", there have been many victims here and you will get very little sympathy. The US embassy can do little except call your family and try to get lots of money to get you out of jail. You will be permanently forbidden to come in here. It is not fair, it is unjust, but fighting it is not very practical unless you are a zillionaire with the President of US on your side.

You have your answer about the pot. About the cigarettes, no, U.S. cigarettes are not widely sold in Mexico. What you see all over the place are similar brands, but produced in Mexico from inferior tobacco. Bring the cigarettes with you, from the Duty Free store if you're flying.

Thanks everyone!
I haven't smoked weed for years so I really don't care about it that much, I was just curious. As far as the cigarettes are concerned, I don't think I could smoke 2 cartons in a month so I will just bring enough for my 4 night stay. I hope to quit when I get home so I don't need to bring any home with me. Thanks again!
