| Kyoto | Shops that sell Kimonos at decent prices Posted: Tue March 25, 2008 08:53 PM UTC
Hello,
I will be in Kyoto in November and I need to buy 2 kimonos as a present (one for a male, one for a female). Are there any places that sell new kimonos for adults at affordable prices? I heard that the starting price for a nice kimono (new, not a second hand one) is around $150-$180. Is this price range accurate? Thank you, Monica |

I can't tell you anything about prices since I wasn't looking to buy but the Nishijin Textile Center is the place to go for a large variety of kimonos. They even have 'fashion shows' regularly during the day. The address is on my Kyoto page.

Thanks, I will make sure I check them out. It is nice to see how they make them, etc.

From my experience, which is limited and in Tokyo, you are way off. They are very expensive. I believe that you could get one at that price but I don't think it would be complete, and it would be low quality. They are very elaborate and a complete set is or can be several pieces that make up one kimono. You still should be able to find out for sure before you leave, there should be other web sites and or people that can answer your question with more confidence.
good luck!

proper silk kimonos (with all its accessories) are way more expensive than that(a few thousand), unless you want to be getting yukatas (cotton summer kimonos). You might want to consider get kimono related or other traditional craft items instead.

If you don't mind getting gently used ones you should browse the flea markets. I've gotten really nice kimonos for US$15-20 before. What a bargain! Note that these are REAL kimonos, not the cotton yukatas that the Japanese wear in the summertime. You will need to get an obi and ties as well for the kimono. Don't forget the getas.
If you want new, they are in the upper hundreds-thousands range. No way you can get it for under $200. Whoever told you that is greatly mistaken.
