I reckon you could go to most clubs and ask to train with them in the process pick up a few tips.

I would ask the AFL for assistance to match you with a club, the attached web link indicates that they see it as one of their roles (plus they are very keen to get irish interaction going forward)

http://afl.com.au/Development/PlayAFL/OpenAge/tabid/10522/default.aspx

I know their are ameteur clubs in South Melbourne and Albert Park but I would be hopeful the above link might get you somewhere where they want to train you up. Good luck.

Just to let you know that the Sandringham VFL club is in the second tier under the AFL and pay their players to play. They may be prepared to train you for the three months your here as they are a very reputable community club (everyone seems to know someone who can help if they cannot in a football club)but I think your best bet would be a more local club. I reckon you may even be able to pick up some match time which would be a real buzz even if it is in the reserves or at a lower level. Good luck and hope it works out for you.

I know they are just under the AFL, but they would have affiliated clubs that are less professional.

The local St Kilda team (not the AFL Saints) plays on the oval behind Luna Park called the Peanut Farm, A short walk from the main street, and a couple of teams play out of the Albert Park playing fields beside the Albert Park lake, about a 1km walk from the main street (fitzroy St). most of them train on a Tuesday and Thursday night so just roll up about 6 o,clock they'd be rapt to have you. Stay after training for a beer and you'll have instant new best friends who just like laughing at your funny accent.
