| Rabat | Studying Arabic in Morocco? Posted: Tue March 25, 2008 01:50 AM UTC
I am a college student interested in learning Arabic. By summertime, I will have completed 2 semesters of Arabic. I am extremely interested in continuing my learning of Arabic over the summer, and I was wondering where the best place to learn the language would be. Some things that are of importance to me are: quality of instruction, location of the school, and activities outside of the school. Since I am going alone, I want to study somewhere where I won't feel secluded or outside of society. Also, scenery is of great importance. All things considered, where would you guys recommend studying Arabic? (I want to study for a period of about 2 months...I'm not sure if that changes anything). ( I know I posted this about a month ago in the Sousse and Damascus forum; however, those are no longer options.)

Sorry, I cannot answer to your main question, but why do you write Sousse is no longer an option? Do you mean for security reasons? Then, this is completely wrong. Tunisia remains perfectly safe. Problems have recently occured in the very south, in the desert, around the border with Algeria and most probably IN Algeria. No problem in Sousse!

Hi,
Learning Arabic or any foreign language is a good thing. In my opinion,be in close contact with the Moroccans and try to practice your language is better. If need to enroll in a private school either in Rabat or Marrakech I may ask a friend of mine who has connections in these institutes and recommend one. Just give me more details as to your dates of coming and then I will arrange that for you. Cheers, rachid_qotaibah2002@yahoo.fr

I said that Sousse isn't really an option anymore primarily because I couldn't find many schools in Sousse. I know there is the Bourguiba Institute in Tunis, but if I have other options, I'd prefer them.

Morocco is a great place to visit/spend some time so learning a language there would be a good opportunity but bear in mind the Arabic has a Moroccan influence - Darija is the Moroccan version of Arabic. Moroccans learn classical Arabic ie watch a lot of TV from the Arab countries but a lot of Arabs in those countries would not understand the Darija spoken by Moroccans.
But if youre adaptable and keen Id see it as a bonus to add that sphere to your learning and abilties. But Im sure that youd find classical Arabic being taught in Morocco - and the major cities such as Marrakech, Rabat, Fes would be good locations to spend some time. Lots of sights and scenery to visit from these 3 cities - central and interesting locations with good access to train and bus transport.

I wouldn't go to Morocco to study Arabic: Maghrebi Arabic is too distinct from MSA. Myself, I'd go to Saa'na in Yemen. If you want scenery, Yemen is the most astonishingly beautiful country & Yemeni Arabic is fairly close to MSA so you'd be able to practise.

I would agree that Moroccan Arabic is little bit different than other Arabic dialect. I would suggest Egypt, Yemen or Jordan. Syria is a very good option if you can go there.
