| Copán | Copan in May Posted: Mon March 24, 2008 12:26 PM UTC
I'm taking a trip to Copan May 4-6 and I have several questions.
1. what would the weather be like? 2. is it safe to explore a place by oneself (not being a part of a tourist group)? 3. any advice on things to do there besides the ruins? |

Don't know the weather in May. The ruins are very secure and the town of Copan Ruinas is SUPER touristy for Honduras so you will be safe exploring by yourself - no problem, even at night. As for other things to do - there is plenty but quite frankly everything is very overpriced there. But if you have a large budget you could do hot springs, coffee fincas, hiking, mountain biking, etc. I didn't because all the prices were an absolute rip-off compared to other areas of the country and for that matter Central America. If you like ruins shoot across the border to Qurigua in Guatemala and maybe hit Rio Dulce and the hotspring waterfalls at Finca Paraiso? Or you could head to Santa Rosa de Copan for a cigar factory tour and/or Gracias for some hiking or plain ol small town living in Honduras? Just a thought.

In May the rainy season will be beginning (it seems to be early this year and its started a little bit already). Most of the rain falls in the afternoons and evenings from about 3pm onwards and it rarely rains in the mornings. This means its quite easy to plan around it. Temperatures in the region are pretty much the same all year round, but May is the most humid month, so it will seem quite hot at times. At such times, the rain in quite welcome as it cools the air.
The previous post covered much of the things to do around Copan. There is more on offer here than in most of the country. It is easy to do alone, but there are guides on the site that are pretty knowledgeable. Honduras is a very cheap country to travel in but, as said previously, Copan is one of the most expensive places. However, everything is by comparison and Copan seems very cheap to me when I visit from El Salvador. Twenty dollars will get you quite a nice hotel and there are probably much cheaper options. Safety is not a major issue in Copan, but there are occasional reports of tourists being robbed at some of the surrounding sites. There are plenty of guides in town offering tours, so it should not be a problem with them.
