Hi

I am planning to backpack end of 2008 with my brother to Argentina, Chile, Peru & finally departing from Rio.. Preferred mode of transport - Buses & flights. I wuld like to know:

1. imp sight seeings in each of these places
2. how long is reqd in each of these places
3. what is the best period to visit
4. Approx budget per pax
5. is it suggested to take a package tour or on our own

If you start your trip y the end of the year, the best would be to visit first Ushuaia, then to go north to Calafate to see the Glaciar Perito Moreno, then to the southern Lakes (Bariloche or San Martin de los Andes) then to Mendoza, crossing then to Chile through the Andes. Along Chile any other VT will answer your question. From Ushuaia to Calafate, better go by air.

how long do you have?

max 3 weeks (excluding international travel)

If you have max 3 weeks, I'd just go to Cusco and stay there.

that is a short trip to see a lot of places. i think you should decide on what you would really like to see. i think you will end up flying to rio at the end of your trip from wherever you are.
it will be summer so patagonia is great then. i will be there then as well doing trips.
package trips can save you some time and planning and you'll often stay in better hotels.
